SpectrumOS 1.0 · Arch Linux · Hyprland · x86_64

Work. Play. Defeat the Great Backlog.

SpectrumOS is an Arch Linux distribution with a cohesive, keyboard-driven Hyprland desktop for gaming, professional work, development, and everyday life. One system for your code, your campaigns, and the suspicious number of browser tabs you call research.

I built SpectrumOS around the way I actually use my computer. The goal: the freedom of Arch, useful tools within reach, and a desktop that feels like it belongs together. Your main quest is getting on with your day.

Choose your next daily driver

A good fit if you want Arch’s software ecosystem, a tiling Wayland workflow, and integrated controls without assembling the entire desktop yourself. Here is what you get for your next adventure.

Gaming

The gaming profile brings Steam, Lutris, Wine Staging, Winetricks, Proton GE, GameMode, Gamescope, MangoHud, GOverlay, and vkBasalt, with matching Vulkan and 32-bit libraries. Tune performance, watch frame times, and get back to the boss fight. Game compatibility still depends on Proton, drivers, and anti-cheat support.

Work and development

Hyprland workspaces, keyboard navigation, Kitty and Alacritty defaults, Visual Studio Code, Hugo, and Python tools give coding and creative work room to breathe. Questline helps turn a sprawling project into the next manageable task. The deadline dragon remains your responsibility.

Everyday use

Browse, email with Evolution, chat with Discord, Telegram, or Whatsie, manage files in Thunar, and play media with VLC or Stash. KDE Connect links your phone; USB MTP, removable drives, archives, NTFS, and exFAT support make moving files routine.

Colors that travel together

Wallpaper-derived semantic colors carry through the shell, terminals, launcher, notifications, GTK and Qt applications, folders, and cursor options. Change a wallpaper and the desktop follows. Dramatic wardrobe changes are allowed between meetings.

Arch freedom, integrated desktop

Pacman handles signed Arch and SpectrumOS packages; Paru handles the reviewed AUR catalog separately. Flatpak and Flathub expand your app choices. Full and Lean installations both include Stash, Questline, and UKVM. Choose CPU, GPU, and laptop or desktop profiles to suit your hardware.

Updates with a way back

The update workflow checks readiness, makes Btrfs restore points with matching boot backups where supported, applies full package upgrades and migrations, then checks system health. Stable packages are signed. Recovery restores the system and boot together; your home data stays outside system rollback. Even heroes appreciate a save point.

Made here. Embedded in SpectrumOS.

UKVM, Stash, and Questline are apps we made and integrated into the distro. Both Full and Lean install them from the ISO’s signed offline repository. Their Spectrum controls and colors belong to the same desktop.

UKVM · UniversalKVM

Share a keyboard and mouse between trusted Linux computers. The native Spectrum widget handles setup, discovery, verified pairing, peer placement, service status, and permissions. Text clipboard sharing and secure file transfers are separate opt-in features; the themed file and folder picker makes sending straightforward. Compare pairing codes and approve desktop portal prompts yourself. One desk, several machines, fewer rounds of “where did I leave that mouse?”

Open with Super + Shift + K. Linux/Wayland integration is the current focus; Windows and macOS backends are not implemented. Interrupted file transfers do not resume.

Stash · your music, your files

A fast Rust terminal app combining a dual-pane file browser, music player, and searchable library. Preview files, select batches, and copy or move with background progress. Queue tracks, seek, shuffle, repeat, edit tags, build playlists, and follow lyrics. The Library Healer suggests fixes for missing metadata for you to review. Your folder named “final_FINAL_music_2” has met its match.

Launch Stash or run stash. Spectrum colors follow the desktop; MPRIS metadata and artwork appear in the media widgets.

Questline · productivity with a plot

A terminal productivity RPG: projects become Campaigns, tasks become Quests, notes become Scrolls, and finishing real work earns XP. Set priorities, due dates, and steps; use focus sessions and soundscapes; grow a Zen Tree, unlock powers and relics, and track project money in the Treasury. Offline by default, with optional device and Fellowship sync. The Notification Swarm finally has a worthy opponent.

Run questline or open the desktop widget with Super + Shift + Q. The widget exposes Overview, Tasks, Sidequests, Scrolls, Treasury, Tree, Focus, and Hero.

Your desktop’s adventuring party

Every current widget and its job, described in plain language. Use the bar, launcher, Control Center, or shortcuts to reach them. A practical toolkit for your daily quests.

Control Center

System load, memory, disk, uptime, audio and brightness, plus appearance, bar profiles, window settings and quick tools. Your command post; no ceremonial briefing required.

Dashboard

Clock, date, weather, media, system readings and a month calendar in one overview. Reconnaissance before opening another twelve tabs.

Shell bar, workspaces and tray

Top or left placement, multiple profiles including Minimal, active-window information, workspace navigation and app tray access. Keyboard navigation and optional widget bounce keep it adaptable.

Application launcher

Search installed apps and launch them with the keyboard. Super + D is your portal out of the endless menu labyrinth.

Network

Wi-Fi selection and radio control, Ethernet status, signal, traffic, IPv4/IPv6, gateways and public IP, with connection editing and protocol choices. Diagnose the connection before blaming the router dragon.

Bluetooth

Power, scan, pair, connect, trust or remove devices, inspect details, and open advanced Blueman settings. Recruit headphones into the party.

Displays and brightness

Resolution, refresh rate, scale, position, rotation, and monitor arrangements, plus per-device brightness on supported laptop panels and DDC/CI monitors. Guards prevent disabling your only active display.

Audio

Output and input selection, per-device volume and mute, playback controls, player selection, track information, artwork and waveform. Keep the meeting microphone and the victory soundtrack under control.

Media notch

Compact track title, artist, artwork and playback controls while music plays. Stash and other MPRIS players can join the soundtrack.

Power and battery

Charge, charging state, remaining time, health and power rate when hardware reports them; desktops show system readings. Switch power profiles to balance performance and battery life.

Keep awake

Toggle the idle inhibitor from the bar to keep the session awake during a presentation or long-running activity. The screen can take its nap after your quest.

Typography and keyboard layout

Choose global font size, monospace family, and US, international or Spanish keyboard layouts, including combinations. Accents deserve proper equipment too.

Mouse settings

Movement speed, wheel distance, natural scrolling, cursor size and adaptive cursor colors, with reset controls. Tune the pointer without hunting through config files.

Time and region

Set time zone and automatic network time. Deadlines are formidable enough without fighting the wrong clock.

Weather

Current conditions, temperature, forecasts, saved locations, location switching and refresh. Check whether the outside world has enabled rain mode.

Calendar

Browse months and dates in a compact calendar. A quick view of time, even when Tuesday feels like a surprise encounter.

Wallpapers and appearance

Browse your wallpaper library, apply a background, recolor with available filters, or use Spectrumize me for a random change. Palette updates follow through the desktop and apps.

Notifications

Toast notifications, history, dismissal and Do Not Disturb. Review what happened without letting the Notification Swarm interrupt every thought.

File search

Find files by name from the shell and open a result. Rescue the document you carefully stored somewhere very memorable.

Calculator

Evaluate expressions in a small desktop panel. For calculations that exceed your remaining mental mana.

Password generator

Choose length and character groups, generate a password and copy it. Upgrade the inventory beyond password123.

Emoji picker

Search and copy emoji from a keyboard-friendly picker. Diplomacy sometimes requires a well-placed coffee cup.

Color picker and saved colors

Pick screen colors repeatedly until Escape, copy values, and revisit saved colors. Bring back useful loot from your design expedition.

Screenshot tool

Choose screen or area capture from the desktop capture panel. Keep the capture tools a keypress away when you need to share a detail or record an issue.

Screen recorder

Record a monitor, selected area or window, choosing desktop or microphone audio. Set MP4, MKV or WebM, video quality and frame rate. Videos save to Videos/Recordings; a visible recording indicator opens the recorder.

Audio recorder

Record an input, output, or both mixed together. Adjust selected device levels and choose MP3, Opus, AAC, FLAC or WAV, with quality and channel settings. Closing the panel keeps recording; Stop and save finalizes it.

Recording indicators

A red dot on every monitor, including Minimal layouts, shows active recording. Microphone and camera icons identify audio and screen recording and reopen their panels.

Focus timer

Start timed work and break sessions, select a task, and track the remaining time. Questline also offers its own focus view and soundscapes. One quest at a time beats seventeen half-finished boss fights.

Questline desktop widget

Overview and next tasks; create, edit and complete Tasks and their steps; track recurring Sidequests; browse Scrolls; inspect Treasury entries and accounts; care for your Tree; use Focus; and view Hero XP, class and powers. The desktop becomes your quest board.

UKVM desktop widget

Set up and pair trusted machines, arrange peers, review control permissions, enable optional clipboard or file sharing, and select files or folders to send. Open it with Super + Shift + K.

Updates

Review update checks, then confirm in the terminal. Update Arch and SpectrumOS together, or include AUR through Paru and system/user Flatpak apps. Restore points, migrations and a final health check accompany system upgrades.

Keyboard shortcuts

Browse shortcuts and activate supported actions directly. Learn workspace, window, capture and utility commands without memorizing an ancient spellbook.

Session controls

Lock, suspend, log out, reboot or power off from a compact rail with keyboard navigation. Save your work before ending the chapter.

Igor companion

Optional desktop visits, musical reactions, quest celebrations and naps. His story below is the reason he belongs here.

Igor ♥

For Igor, always.

Igor was my cat. He died, and this is my way of remembering him. His presence in SpectrumOS is personal: a little piece of the companion I miss, still beside me while I work, play, and go about my day.

The optional Igor companion visits the desktop, reacts to music, celebrates completed quests, and naps at screen edges with his familiar face and paws. Move the pointer over sleeping Igor to wake and dismiss him. Visits can be turned off. A small place for him in the system, and a lasting place for him in my heart.

Your next adventure starts with an ISO
